Equipment Review: Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter

Equipment Review: Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter
I have been using the Sawyer Squeeze water filter since it has been out and thought it would be a good time to do a review with all of the man-made filters I have been making lately (Water Bottle Filter- LINK; Tripod Water Filter- LINK). This filter is a nice compact option that will fit inline with a water bottle, platypus bag (3-4 bags included depending on the package you choose, the bags included are either 8 oz, 16 oz, 32 oz, or 64 oz) or water bladder. The filter has a hollow-fiber membrane which removes 99.99999% of bacteria, such as salmonella, cholera and E.coli; removes 99.9999% of all protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium. The water filter has a built in push/pull cap so you can spray water into your mouth or use it to fill another clean container (it takes roughly 30 seconds to squeeze the contents of an entire large platypus bag into another container.

If you are on the fence as to weather this system is worth the $50 the kit costs, pick it up you will not regret it! If $50 is still a bit much for you consider the smaller version (Sawyer Mini) which filters 100,000 gallons of water and does not come with any bags. I believe that this filter puts out some of the softest and best tasting water even from a source that looks like the pictures below!

Video of Sawyer Squeeze in Action: Mud Puddle to Clean Drinking Water!

For those who don't like Youtube the picture version:

1) The original Sawyer Squeeze along with its packaging and the four platypus water bags the filter came with full of water.
2) Water bottle of choice (old Rubbing Alcohol bottle I had laying around that I washed out) and then filled with water from a mud puddle I came across.
3) Sawyer Squeeze threaded on to the water bottle ready for operation. Please be sure that the filter is threaded on tightly and then wipe down the filter and bottle so no residual dirty water will go into your clean water container.
4) Close up of the easy to use instructions. Only other instructions are how to clean it and that is essentially remove the cap and reverse flow clean water through the filter.
5) Puddle water +Sawyer Squeeze= Clean drinking water
 6) Clean and drinkable water once filtration is complete

Conclusions:

This filter works with the worst water sources (please remember that chemical contamination it will only have limited effectiveness) and will give you one of the softest and best tasting glasses of water from any source. At $50.00  you get a water filter that will last a lifetime and three platypus bags to go with it that will serve you quite awhile. Add in the capability of hooking the filter to a water bladder or water bottle and this is the most versatile water filter on the market and one of the best price points.
